Australia’s Stosur Sets Sights On Tennis Top 10

australia's stosaur_Australia’s top-ranked female player, Samantha Stosur, believes she is poised to the make the quantum leap into the rarified air of the top 10 next year.

Speaking shortly after she arrived in Perth on Wednesday to prepare for her season-opening duties at the mixed teams Hopman Cup, which starts on Saturday, the world No.13 said her confidence had only continued to rise during a breakthrough 2009, including her first singles title.

The imposing 25-year-old, who will be paired with dual grand slam winner Lleyton Hewitt in the Hopman Cup, said continued hard work and discipline would ensure a further rise in the rankings in 2010.

“I have had the best year of my career this year and I hope to build on that,” she said.

“I have improved a lot and it is all going in the right direction.

“I’d love to be top 10 and I am not too far off it and that is definitely the next goal.

“I am only going to get there if I keep doing what I am doing.”

Stosur said the guarantee of three singles matches under the Hopman Cup round robin format offered perfect preparation for the Australian Open, the new year’s first grand slam starting January 19 in Melbourne.

Blessed with one of the biggest serves in women’s tennis, she believes she has all the necessary weapons to snare a gram slam singles title, and that it is just a matter of fine-tuning her game.

“If I can keep improving my game anything is possible,” she said.

“If I match up my game against a lot of the girls that have won grand slams, I have got as good a serve as them, I’ve got as good a forehand, I move well and everything else.

“It just tidying all those things together and making it happen for that two weeks of the year.

“Two weeks is a long time to peak and you have to get used to playing great players day in, day out.

“There is no reason I can’t.”

Stosur and Hewitt open their Hopman Cup campaign on Saturday against the Romanian pairing of Sorana Cirstea and Victor Hanescu. The Himalayan

A Solid Financial Plan

savings accounts_With the recent market fluctuations of the past few years, people are looking for attractive, yet safe, earning potential. An important skill to have, especially in our economy, is the money management. This not only includes portfolio investments, but also checking and savings accounts and bill payments. Students, regardless either they are in high school or college, are just starting out in the real world and often don’t realize how much money they can save by just keeping track of their expenses. This is probably because proper finance skills are not severely taught in high school, and most of the students graduated without knowing much about credit scores and credit management.

Nevertheless, when you are trying to save money, it is always smart to shop for a good bargain. It is also smart to plan ahead to find the best bargain. Clip coupons, buy store brands and shop during sales, so you can save money on items that you need to buy. Towards this point, savings accounts are one of the most important parts of a solid financial plan, as most of the financial planners suggest that everyone shall always keep a savings account that they can use anytime for a number of uses, especially in case of any emergency. So, the next time you probably want to stroll around hopping from one place to the other may be with friends, then better equip yourself with the above mentioned.

Tobacco Plant Leaves Can Be Used To Make Efficient Biofuel

tobacco plant leaves can be used to make efficient biofuel_In a new study, researchers from the Biotechnology Foundation Laboratories at Thomas Jefferson University, US, have identified a way to increase the oil in tobacco plant leaves, which may be the next step in using the plants for efficient biofuel.

According to Vyacheslav Andrianov, assistant professor of Cancer Biology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, tobacco can generate biofuel more efficiently than other agricultural crops.

However, most of the oil is typically found in the seeds. Tobacco seeds are composed of about 40 percent oil per dry weight.

Although the seed oil has been tested for use as fuel for diesel engines, tobacco plants yield a modest amount of seeds, at only about 600 kg of seeds per acre.

Dr. Andrianov and his colleagues sought to find ways to engineer tobacco plants, so that their leaves expressed the oil.

“Tobacco is very attractive as a biofuel because the idea is to use plants that aren’t used in food production,” Dr. Andrianov said.

“We have found ways to genetically engineer the plants so that their leaves express more oil. In some instances, the modified plants produced 20-fold more oil in the leaves,” he added.

Typical tobacco plant leaves contain 1.7 percent to 4 percent of oil per dry weight.

The plants were engineered to overexpress one of two genes: the diacyglycerol acytransferase (DGAT) gene or the LEAFY COTYLEDON 2 (LEC2) gene.

The DGAT gene modification led to about 5.8 percent of oil per dry weight in the leaves, which about two-fold the amount of oil produced normally.

The LEC2 gene modification led to 6.8 percent of oil per dry weight.

“Based on these data, tobacco represents an attractive and promising ‘energy plant’ platform, and could also serve as a model for the utilization of other high-biomass plants for biofuel production,” Dr. Andrianov said. Newstrack India

Pest Attack Worries Farmers

pest attack worries farmers_Paddy farmers of the district are worried as diseases caused by pest attack pose threat to their hope for good yield this season. Though there were reports of paddy affected by diseases such as brown plant hopper, sheath blight and stem borer, it is stated that leaf rollers has caused considerable damage to the standing paddy crops. The reports suggest that though the disease attack was widespread in the district, the areas, which were inundated by rainwater during the November rainfall, were largely affected.

Farmers say that R.S. Mangalam, Thiruvadanai, Ramanathapuram, Nainarkoil, Panaikulam and other coastal belt of the district had been affected with leaf roller. They said that the insect had eaten the green portion of the paddy crops in many fields.

“Though we have received good rainfall this year, the disease is threatening the crop. We have been forced to concentrate heavily on fighting the disease. If proper attention is not taken, it will affect the productivity,” said Rajan of R.S. Mangalam.

He added that many farmers of R.S. Mangalam, were facing the same problem.

It was stated that the continuous rain coupled with chill climate had caused the spread of the diseases particularly leaf roller.

S. Rajendran, Joint Director of Agriculture, told ‘The Hindu’ though there were reports of pest attack in a few places, there was no cause for concern. The farmers were asked to spray the recommended pesticide in the affected fields. Enough stock had been maintained in all agricultural extension centres in the district. It was sold at 50 percent subsidy to the farmers.

Z. Kamaludeen, Assistant Director of Agriculture, Tiruppullani said the affected fields had already been recovering. Farmers were clearly educated on the need to apply mild dose of the pesticide to fight the disease. Since bright sunshine had been reported for the last one week, the disease would be automatically contained gradually. By R.S. Mangalam, Thiruvadanai, Ramanathapuram, The Hindu

How To Stick To A Healthful Diet In The New Year

how to stick to a healthful diet in the new year_New Year’s resolutions are a time-honored tradition: More than a third of Americans made them last year, mostly around eating and exercise, one poll found.

But breaking them is almost as popular a tradition. While your holiday fruitcake might last a year, barely half of diet-and-exercise resolutions do, according to that same Wall Street Journal-Harris Interactive Health-Care Poll.

Too many resolutions require drastic changes that set high expectations and take great willpower, says Jenny Bair, a behavior-change specialist, life coach and co-owner of Living Well Dallas.

“We get too hard on ourselves,” she says. “People start off with a bang, especially with exercise, and they hurt or injure themselves. That will either prevent you from doing that activity again or set up a cycle of avoidance or procrastination. And then you feel like a failure. Instead, let’s start out small, so we can be successful.”

But keeping a resolution to live a healthier lifestyle doesn’t have to make you miserable. To prove the point, here’s a list of things that sound decadent but that you don’t actually have to give up, if you take the right approach.

Snacks

If you’ve felt guilty about snacking, realize that nutritionally, you’re on the right track, according to Amy Goodson, registered dietitian at the Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Forth Worth.

“Eating small meals actually boosts your metabolism and keeps you from being as hungry at the next meal,” Goodson says. Pair a carbohydrate with a protein or with a healthy fat at every snack. For instance, eat cheese, peanut butter or nuts with fruit.

Caffeine

If caffeine gives you headaches, interrupts sleep or upsets your digestion, it may be time to ease up. You may suffer such side effects if you have more than two cups a day.

Otherwise, the antioxidants in coffee and tea are healthy, as is low-fat milk in your latte. Caffeine helps you focus and is not as dehydrating as once thought, Goodson says.

Mexican food

Salsa, that fat-free crush of fresh tomatoes, is “the best invention ever,” says Lisa F. Harper Mallonee, registered dietitian at Texas A&M Health Science Center and the Baylor College of Dentistry. Mexican food, with its abundance of beans and other vegetables, is a great option for eating out, according to Goodson and Mallonee. Because fajitas are grilled, they are the best fat-free option, but shredded chicken and cheese are excellent sources of protein, too.

Red meat

“Red meat is what we all feel guilty about,” says Mallonee. “But you can get lean cuts of all meats, and it’s actually packed with protein and lots of wonderful vitamins and minerals like iron and zinc.”

Do watch your portion size, Goodson says. “Keep it to three to six ounces, depending on the size of the palm of your hand, she said. Lean cuts include sirloin, tenderloin, flank and round steaks.

Chocolate

Cocoa and chocolate are vegetarian foods from the seeds of the Theobroma cacao fruit tree, rich with phytonutrients and antioxidants that, studies show, help reduce blood pressure and protect arteries, Goodson says. Milk chocolate has more sugar, and the milk dilutes the health benefits somewhat, though.

Dessert

If you fill up on good food at meals and slow down when you eat, smaller portions will satisfy. You may not even want dessert, say the nutritionists we consulted. “But allow yourself to have dessert,” Mallonee says. “Split it, share it with friends. That makes it fun.” If you want to make desserts with fewer calories, use light whipped cream as a topping instead of icing, and use skim milk and egg whites in recipes, Goodson says.

Thinking of yourself

Selfishness hardly sounds like an ideal resolution. But taking care of yourself and thinking about what you want helps you meet your goals. “It’s OK having an internal focus,” says Michele Wahlder, owner of Life Possibilities coaching of Dallas and author of Alphatudes, the Alphabet of Gratitude: 26 Solutions for Life’s Little Challenges, which has a March release date. “It’s saying, ‘I have some influence on what I say, what I do and how I act.’ “

Wahlder suggests making a list of what you can control in your life and what you can’t. ” ‘Winter’s here, it’s long’ is what you can’t control,” she said. ” ‘What can I do to make it fun?’ is what you can do.”

After clients do this type of soul-searching, they pick a theme for the year ahead instead of listing resolutions. Examples include having fun, working harder, spending more time with family or making healthy choices.

“Then, you’re always looking for opportunities,” Wahlder says. “You’ll realize that exercising or not exercising, for example, is a choice you make based on what you want. There’s no need for shame.”

“Just put your shoes on – it’s OK if you don’t go for that first walk. Take baby steps.” By Daphne Howland, The Dallas Morning News
