2009 Was Good For Butterflies, But Bad For The Cuckoo

It has been disappointing for staycationers and somewhat slippery for Christmas shoppers. But while this year’s weather wasn’t great for we humans, there have been mixed blessings for the country’s wildlife.

Butterflies and some other types of insect saw their numbers soar, but cuckoos, daddy longlegs, bats and beetles fared less well.

Although the wet summers of 2007 and last year, coupled with mild winters, disturbed the natural hibernation and breeding cycles of several plants and animals, this year’s dry summer helped repair a lot of the damage.

Matthew Oates, of the National Trust, said that while the UK did not bask in the ‘barbecue summer’ promised by the Met Office, the weather was better than the previous two years.

A third ‘rotten’ summer would have done serious damage to even more species, he added.

Purple emperor butterflies are among the species to have benefited from the coldest weather for years, allowing them to hibernate as caterpillars to emerge strongly in the summer.

Painted lady butterflies were also seen migrating in their millions and it was a good year for seven spot ladybirds.

‘Many insects managed to hibernate properly, instead of being constantly woken up by unseasonably mild days,’ said Mr Oates.

‘This year has stopped the rot and a lot of wildlife has started to get its way back up the ladder – but we still need a good summer in 2010.’ But despite this it has not all been good news for British wildlife.

Along with other birds, choughs in Cornwall and Pembrokeshire struggled to feed in the face of frozen ground in February and Dartford warblers also suffered.

The number of cuckoos has also fallen sharply in the past 12 months, with the bird disappearing from some areas altogether.

Mr Oates said the fall could be down to a variety of reasons including a lack of their favourite food, hairy caterpillars, which in turn have been affected by the poor weather. Earlier this year, the cuckoo was added to the ‘Red List’ of the UK’s most threatened birds.

Only between 10,000 and 20,000 breeding pairs now migrate from Africa each year.

And scientists are also trying to pinpoint why the daddy longlegs – or common cranefly – has gone missing.

What is clear, however, is that its disappearance is likely to have a huge effect on bat numbers because they rely on the insect for food. By Luke Salkeld, The Daily Mail

Vitamin C Slows Ageing

Touted as a remedy for common cold, Vitamin C has also shown promise in slowing down the ageing process. A study has shown that it facilitates output of embryonic-like stem cells from adult cells.

Over the past few years, it has been known that adult cells can be reprogrammed into cells with characteristics similar to embryonic stem cells by turning on a select set of genes.

Most embryonic stem cells are derived from embryos that develop from eggs fertilised in vitro in a fertilisation clinic.

Although the reprogrammed cells, called induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), have tremendous potential for regenerative medicine, the conversion is extremely inefficient.

“The low efficiency of the reprogramming process has hampered progress with this technology and is indicative of how little we understand it,” explains Duanqing Pei, senior author of a new study on the subject.

“Further, this process is most challenging in human cells, raising a significant barrier for producing iPSCs and serious concerns about the quality of the cells that are generated,” explains Pei from South China Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine.

Researchers found that adding vitamin C, an essential nutrient that is abundant in citrus fruits, enhanced iPSC generation from both mouse and human cells.

Vitamin C accelerated gene expression changes and promoted a more efficient transition to the fully reprogrammed state, said a release of the South China Institute.

Somewhat to their surprise, they found that other antioxidants do not have the same effect, but vitamin C does seem to act at least in part through slowing cell senescence. These findings were published online in Cell Stem Cell. The Times of India.

Russia To Work On New Nuclear Missiles: Medvedev

Russia will work on a new generation of nuclear missiles to ensure its nuclear deterrent remains effective, President Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday.

Medvedev said the new missiles would be developed in full accordance with arms agreements made with the United States. “Of course, we will develop new systems, including delivery systems, that is, missiles,” Medvedev said in an end-of-year interview with state-controlled television channels.

“This process will be continued, and our nuclear shield will always be efficient and sufficient to protect our national interests,” Medvedev said.

The Kremlin chief said Russia and the United States were close to a new deal on reducing vast Cold War arsenals of nuclear weapons, adding that he had “trustworthy relations” with US President Barack Obama. Zeenews

Gold Catches Fancy Of Common Investors

Gold has made a tentative entry into the portfolios of many common investors in 2009. Of course, it was mainly aided by the yellow metal’s blinding returns in a short bursts, when all other assets were plumbing depths in the aftermath of global economic crisis. According to investment experts, many investors have realized the precious metal’s ability to act a stabilizer in the wake of economic uncertainties and its important role as a perfect diversification tool over a long period of time during the current year.

“Earlier, we used to explain to our clients about the importance of diversifying into various asset classes such as debt, equity, gold and so on, but these days very little explaining is required to convince them about investing in gold,” says a private wealth manager in a foreign bank. “People have actually warmed up to the idea of diversifying into commodity, thanks to scorching gold prices,” he adds. Gold has touched a historic peak of around Rs 18,200 per 10 gram early this month. Though there has been a correction ofaround 7.0-7.5% since then, experts believe the metal would continue to make gains in the coming days.

“Most investors watch the movement of sensex closely, but they don’t do the same with gold prices. The news hit their eyes only when the prices are up. Also, extreme volatility is mostly absent in gold unlike the market which is totally unpredictable,” says a mutual fund manager, who doesn’t want to be quoted. “We believe investors’ new found enthusiasm to invest in gold is more of a psychological factor. Gold ETFs have been attracting large number of investors these days.”

However, investors should not take the new fancy to the extreme, warn consultants. “Investors should understand that gold is unlikely give phenomenal returns in long run. It is not a substitute for stocks. Sure it tends to do well when there is uncertainties in the economy like the one we have just witnessed,” says the wealth manager. “They should invest around 10% of their total portfolio in gold. The percentage can differ according to the individual asset allocation plan,” he says.

Investing more than one’s original plan in any asset, including gold, can have an adverse impact on your returns from the portfolio. For example, gold is likely to give you one or two percent over the inflation rate. If you are removing money from stocks and investing in gold because of the temporary market conditions, it may eat into your returns. Remember, stocks would beat gold in the long term under normal economic conditions.
