Climate Change: Environment Directorate To Sign MoU with TERI

As part of Prime Minister’s action plan on climate change, the Environment Directorate plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in order to carry out research work.

A decision in this regard will be taken by the month-end in a meeting between the Environment Directorate and chief secretary.

The move is a part of the state government’s plan to prepare and submit a detailed action plan on climate change.

The Environment Directorate is the nodal agency appointed in the state for the implementation of the action plan to tackle problems related to climate change. TERI is a non-profit organisation, which works extensively on issues related to environment, energy and sustainable development.

“We are in discussions with TERI to carry out research work required to control the problems of climate change in the state. We have already identified several areas where research needs to be carried out. Apart from these areas, we will also ask them to identify other important areas where research work needs to be undertaken,” said Yashpal Singh, Director of Environment Directorate.

The priority areas of research in the state includes preparation and improvement of environmental status report with special emphasis on climate change, documenting biodiversity status, studying the impact of pesticides and insecticides on the crop production, developing an effective and low-cost technology to control pollution and creating climate database and identifying critical responses to climate change.

“TERI is one of the top-ranking organisations in the field of research. So, apart from their role in research, we will also take their technical expertise for the implementation of other projects related to climate change as well,” said Singh. Indian Express
