Exercise Counts, Whatever Form It Takes!

She’s touted with creating a vigorous fitness dance Bollyfit, but fitness model and dancer Reema Sarin says that people can remain fit even if they don’t have a regular fitness or gym routine. They could get their cardiovascular workouts and resistance training while walking a dog or playing outdoor games with kids. Her mantra is simple: Exercise counts, whatever form it takes!
What are the misconceptions that people have about their fitness regimens?
There are plenty of ‘myths’ about fitness both among people, who have been exercising for a while, as well ‘newcomers’, which I strive to dispel. You don’t have to join a gym to be fit or for that matter, you don’t even need an organised physical fitness routine, provided you have lots of action in life.
Great levels of physical fitness can be achieved at home, either with training machines, weight training, exercise videos, or just walking five days a week. If you engage in cardio work, three or four times a week, you may not need additional weight training. It would pay for women to know that weight lifting does not make them bulky. Also, if a fitness program starts to lose its effect, it’s probably time to change the exercise routine.
What are some of the newer options available in India? How do they help?
People are constantly looking for new, innovative and fun ways to workout, lose weight, without getting bored. Bollyfit, Zumba dance classes and fitness workout regimes like kick-boxing, spin cycling (Spinning), Pilates and power yoga are popular.
We also see people engaging more and more in outdoor fitness activities, like hiking, biking, running, (including marathons), as well as swimming. These new fitness workouts are not only excellent calorie burners, but fantastic for muscle toning and building strength and stamina. They help to increase speed, balance, flexibility, coordination and sharpen reflexes. They also have a fun element to them. They give you a well balanced full body workout.
How did you come up with the concept of ‘Bollyfit’?
About six years ago, I found that people were getting bored of the traditional aerobic workouts. It was around that time, that ‘bollywood remix’ music and new bollywood dance choreographies became a huge hit globally. I decided to mix all three popular rages to create Bollyfit with international fitness moves like aerobics, step aerobics and cardio kick-boxing, Bollywood dancing and Bollywood music at increased speeds so one can get a high energy fun workout at 140 beats per minute.
What role does age and gender play in deciding on the type of fitness routine/workout to follow?
For children whose muscles are still developing, it would be tough to do a full-fledged aerobics routine. Moreover, children are more competitive and it would be better for them to do more sports oriented activities like tennis or swimming.
For those between 18 and 45 years of age, a gym workout which combines different techniques like stress training, resistance training, light weights, aerobic and Pilates would be good since the body needs different kinds of workouts. After 45, it would be more advisable to take to power yoga than aerobics or take up fast walking rather than running marathons. The idea is to moderate both the tempo and the intensity of exercise.
Could you outline your exercise recommendations for those with long working hours and very little free time?
For at least three days out of six, try to spare half an hour for cardio work, preferably in the mornings when energy levels are high. Extend it to an hour on weekend and work specifically on exercising different parts of the body. On one day of the week, give your body rest. While at work, make it a point to take the stairs and to walk as much as possible. If you are likely to be sitting down for long periods, take a break every 20 minutes to get up and walk, even if it is within the cabin. When you walk, your metabolism gets charged up and it becomes difficult to put on weight.
What kind of business opportunities can you spot in the fitness industry today?
Unlike the past, there are a lot more people today who are fitness conscious, not just those who want to lose weight. The trend amongst them is more to have fun or group oriented classes. Personal training is almost out. It poses a great opportunity for people to open studios where different kinds of dance and fitness workouts can be taught in a good ambience. There is also immense potential for franchises of some international dance and fitness chains to be set up in India. Lisa Mary Thomson, The Times of India

Hi Everyone, Great site keep up the good work. May be a little off the subject but ive been looking for exercise bike and spinning bike reviews and have come across these guys London Muscle doing a review of a Kettler Race bike but they dont sell them they link to a different store. Has anyone used them or the guys they refer to? Thanks.
There are so many things connected to aerobics, it had become this big industry. The funny thing I heard is a walk for 30 minutes a day is great and does really good for the body.
Very good article, thanks for sharing the information. Fitness is very important. All that we do, we do for a good lifestyle and if we can’t stay fit, everything is useless.

Very intellegent content that stays on focus. I like the fact it stays in the realm of the niche and not go jumping around on too many out in left field topics….
