Uncommon Scents: The Rise Of Unisex Fragrances

When it comes to mainstream fragrances, the clichés about how men and women want to smell are deeply entrenched. Big brands looking for a scent with mass appeal just need to follow a formula.

For women, concoct a shampoo-like mix of delicate florals, rosiness, Lily of the Valley, fruits, musks and touches of creaminess; and for men, think fresh, aromatic, slightly fruity, apple-y notes with touches of musk and creamy wood. Throw in an ad with a heaving cleavage or ripped chest and voila! you have a gender stereotype in a bottle.

Away from the separate men’s and women’s cabinets in department stores, however, a subtler approach to perfume prevails; one where personality is more important than preconceived ideas about the differences between male and female. The latest addition to the world of ‘no gender’ fragrances is Wonderwood from Commes des Garçons – which was originally just a women’s label (the clue’s in the name.) The brand has helped to pioneer the concept ever since it launched its first fragrance, named after the label, in 1994. Like many other fragrances which aren’t specifically marketed as male or female, and like their previous creations such as Odeur 53 and 888, it’s not conventionally easy and appealing. Scientists Say Test Could Predict Menopause

Doctors could one day use a blood test to predict decades in advance when women will go into menopause, scientists say.

In research to be presented on Monday at a European fertility conference in Rome, Iranian experts say their preliminary study could be a first step toward developing a tool to help women decide when they want to have children.

The test does not predict when women will lose their fertility — which typically occurs about a decade before menopause — but if doctors know when women will go into menopause, they can calculate roughly when they will run out of eggs. Scientists say the test could be especially helpful in identifying women who might go into menopause early — in their late 40s or earlier instead of their mid-50s.

At the moment, there are few clues for doctors to tell which young women may be headed for early menopause. Blood tests and ovary scans only give women a few years’ advance notice. [Read more...]

With her extreme diets and harsh exercise regimes, Gwyneth Paltrow is nothing if not health conscious.

So it must have come as a shock to be told she is suffering from an ailment more commonly the preserve of elderly women.

The 37-year-old actress says she is in the early stages of osteopenia, precursor to the brittle-bone disease osteoporosis.

And according to experts, it could have been caused by the very diets she hoped would keep her in prime condition.

The problem was diagnosed in a bone scan after she suffered a leg fracture. In her internet newsletter Goop, she said: ‘My doctors tested my vitamin D levels, which turned out to be the lowest thing they had ever seen (not a good thing).’

As a result, Miss Paltrow, who won the Best Actress Oscar for her role in Shakespeare In Love, says she has been put on ‘prescription-strength vitamin D’.

She was also told by doctors to spend ‘a bit of time in the sun’.

Osteoporosis is a bone disease which leads to an increased risk of fractures. It is more common in women, especially following the menopause, and can be caused by lack of calcium in the diet and too much exercise.

All of which has led to speculation that the actress’s lifestyle might be in some way to blame. [Read more...]
