California Approves Stringent Pollution Curbs

California regulators on Thursday adopted the nation’s most comprehensive rules to curb emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases, a move that will put the state far ahead of the rest of the country in energy reform.

The regulations, which reward industries most effective in achieving the cuts by allowing them to sell credits to polluters, will create the largest market for carbon trading in the country. Ten states including New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and the New England states are participating in a less extensive system known as the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, which covers only electric utilities.

The California program, which will take effect in 2012, is designed to gradually reduce emissions to about 15 percent below 2012 levels by 2020. A state proposition that would have hobbled its enforcement was soundly defeated in November’s election. [Read more...]

Scarlett Johansson Replaces Angelina Jolie In ‘Gravity’

Scarlett Johansson is preparing to reunite with her Iron Man 2 co-star Robert Downey, Jr. after replacing Angelina Jolie in new sci-fi movie Gravity, according to a report.

The Wanted beauty was originally offered the role as director Alfonso Cuaron’s leading lady in the upcoming 3D film, but she declined and now Johansson has “verbally agreed” to star. The New York Daily News claims Downey, Jr. is slated to appear alongside the Lost In Translation actress in what Cuaron is allegedly touting as “the most ambitious film, technology-wise, since Avatar”.

Sci-fi epic Avatar, directed by James Cameron, was lauded for its stunning 3D effects and won Oscars for Art Direction, Cinematography and Visual Effects at the Academy Awards earlier this year. [Read more...]

The Tudors

As a history buff, I can’t help but love Showtime’s The Tudors. I’ll be the first to admit, their concept of ‘historically accurate’ is far afield from my own, but I love the setting. A claustrophobic castle houses political intrigues, secret alliances, and lots and lots of sex.

Starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the infamous Henry VIII, The Tudors chronicles the journey that took him from being a loyal defender of Catholicism to defying Rome and creating the Church of England. Along the way, we are slowly introduced to his long succession of wives, starting with the pious Queen Catherine who was famously set aside in favor of Anne Boleyn.

Although their interpretation of history might be spotty at best, the acting is always top notch. The first season featured the great Sam Niel as a politically minded cardinal and the regular cast features Jeremy Northam as the sainted Sir Thomas More, Henry Cavil as King Henry’s best friend, and Nick Dunning as the scheming head of the Boleyn clan. Anyone who’s interested in medieval politics, smoldering love scenes, and intense drama will love every minute of Showtime’s The Tudors on cable.

Jessica Alba Excited About Her First Latina Role

Mexican-American actress Jessica Alba has revealed that she got immediately attracted to her latest film because she could draw on her own heritage.

The 29-year-old star reunited with Sin City director Robert Rodriguez for the revenge thriller ‘Machete’.

In the film, she plays a Latina character, a determined US Immigration agent, for the first time.

“I have never played a Latina in a film before… I’ve always thought if I’m going to play a Latina character, I want her to be this dynamic and strong woman, like the women I grew up with,” the Mirror quoted her as telling Tatler magazine.

The actress also said that her heritage meant she had an instant bond with the film’s director.

“Robert Rodriguez’s movies are so entertaining. I grew up Mexican-American and so did he. We were instantly like family. We cook and hang out with the kids,” she said.

The Dangers and Joy of Speed Skating

I’ve been watching the Olympic Games on NBC on directtv hd and I’ve got to say that my favorite sport so far is Speed Skating. There’s so much danger in the game that most people do not notice. It’s a race to the finish and the tension is so high that the athletes will sometimes panic and make a devastating wrong move. One time I saw one of the athletes fall down and the first thing I saw was the razor sharp blades go up in the air, it suddenly becomes an obstacle that the other athletes had to avoid at all costs. Not only to stay in the race, but to protect themselves from getting injured. This sport is fast and fun. In fact, I just saw a German skater sneak into first place at the last second. I think it’s great that anything can happen, even at the last second. I also enjoy the fact that the image is so crystal clear, you can see the ice shaving fly through the air with such precision. It’s the combination of the clarity and the sport that makes it amazing to watch Speed Skating on NBC.
