Cloned Meat Unlikely To Pose Food Safety Risk

Britain’s food safety regulator said that meat and milk from cloned cattle show no difference in composition, compared to traditionally bred cows, and are unlikely to pose a food safety risk.

The Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes said that consumers still may want to see effective labeling of products from clones and their offspring partly due to animal welfare concerns.

The European Commission (EU) recently recommended introducing a five-year ban on the use of cloned animals for food production in the European Union.   Member states in the EU and the EU parliament are debating the proposal. [Read more...]

Yellow, Green Veggies Extend Life

High blood levels of the antioxidant alpha-carotene, found in yellow and green vegetables, appear to reduce the risk of dying over a 14-year period, according to a new study.

Oxygen-related damage to DNA, proteins and fats may play a role in the development of chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer, reveals the study.

Carotenoids—including beta-carotene, alpha-carotene and lycopene—are produced by plants and microorganisms and act as antioxidants, counteracting this damage.

Chaoyang Li of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, and colleagues assessed the relationship between alpha-carotene and the risk of death among 15,318 adults age 20 and older who participated in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Follow-up Study. Fruits, Veg Diet Can Cut Cancer Risk

Eating a wide variety of fruit and vegetables every day can slash the risk of developing lung cancer by a quarter, a study has revealed.

According to the study, eating at least eight types of fruits and vegetables in a day is key and more beneficial than eating only four a day.

Smokers in particular can cut their risk, but it entirely depends on the variety they eat and not just the quantity of food, reports express.co.uk.
