Just over half of American pet owners will buy gifts for their pets this holiday season, showering their four-footed friends with toys and treats.
On average, they’ll spend US$46 ($60) on their animals.
A poll by AP-Petside.com showed 68 per cent of pets getting gifts will be getting a toy, 45 per cent food or another treat, 8 per cent new bedding, 6 per cent clothing, 3 per cent a new lead, collar or harness and 3 per cent new grooming products. Some pets would get more than one gift.
“Christmas is about the pets,” said Gayla McCarthy, 58, of Kekaha, Hawaii, whose Australian shepherd, Echo, will find a toy under the tree.
