Prostate Cancers Advance More In Obese Men

Research has discovered that obese men are three times more likely to see the cancer spread beyond the prostate than those of a healthy weight.

The study suggests rising levels of obesity in recent decades could be an important factor behind higher rates of prostate cancer, although the fact the population is aging is thought to be even more important.

Researchers at Duke University Medical Centre in Durham, North Carolina, made their conclusions after looking at 287 men whose diseased prostates had been removed, who had then seen cancer return.

All had been given chemicals called androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) to limit levels of natural testosterone, which is thought to trigger prostate cancer in some cases.

Those who were obese were three times more likely to have seen the returning cancer spread beyond the prostate after five years as those of a healthy weight, a process known as progression.

Dr Christopher Keto, lead author of the study, presented to the American Urological Association’s annual conference on Sunday, said: “Over the past decades, there has been increasing prevalence of obesity in the U.S. and Europe, and a high rate of prostate cancer that is the second-most lethal cancer for men.” [Read more...]

Can Diets Fight Chronic Pain? The Science Isn’t There

The Internet is littered with diets and supplements that claim to cure everything from everyday aches and pains to heart disease, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer — all by reducing inflammation.

Alternative medicine guru Andrew Weil recommends an anti-inflammation diet, and plans like The Zone and the Mediterranean diet are also built on the principles of the anti-inflammation theory.

“When you talk about a diet that emphasizes antioxidants or a diet that emphasizes foods that are said to have an anti-inflammatory effect, the diets are going to look very, very similar,” says Lisa Cimperman, a dietitian at University Hospitals in Cleveland.

Each diet emphasizes slightly different things, but they all have plenty of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, fish or small amounts of lean meat, whole grains, little to no processed or refined foods, and an emphasis on omega-3 fatty acids like those found in fish oil. [Read more...]

Having Sex Or Drinking Coffee May Cause Stroke: Study

The Dutch study, published in ‘Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association’, identified eight main triggers that appear to increase the risk of intracranial aneurysm (IA) — a weakness in the wall of a brain blood vessel that often causes it to balloon.

If ruptures, it can result in a subarachnoid hemorrhage which is a stroke caused by bleeding at the base of the brain.

Other regular activities that may cause a stroke included vigorous physical exercise, straining to defecate, being startled, being angry and drinking cola, found the study.

“All of the triggers induce a sudden and short increase in blood pressure, which seems a possible common cause for aneurysmal rupture,” said lead researcher Monique H M Vlak of the University Medical Center in Utrecht, the Netherlands. [Read more...]
