Marquez Considers Quitting After Pacquiao Loss

A fuming Juan Manuel Marquez was contemplating retirement after claiming he was “robbed” in a majority decision defeat by Manny Pacquiao in their WBO welterweight clash at the MGM Grand on Saturday.

Holder and heavy favorite Pacquiao retained his title after earning the verdict from two of the three judges while the third ruled that the bout had ended level at 114-114.

Ailing Bartoli Beats Ivanovic

Marion Bartoli of France returns a shot to Ana Ivanovic of Serbia during their match at the Indian Wells WTA tennis tournament in Indian Wells, California.

Indian Wells – France’s Marion Bartoli shrugged off a stomach bug to become the first player to reach the semi-finals at Indian Wells with a 6-4 7-6 victory over former world number one Ana Ivanovic on Wednesday.

Bartoli, at 26 the oldest player left in the draw, won three consecutive games to claim an error-littered first set and ended the match by clinching the second set tiebreak 7-4 with an overhead smash into an open court.

The Frenchwoman, handed a place in the last eight when Belgian Kim Clijsters retired from their encounter the previous day with a painful shoulder, knelt down on the court and pumped both fists in celebration.

Bartoli Back With A Bang

Marion Bartoli, who thought she might be out for six weeks after injuring her calf at the Australian Open, returned after only four with a morale-boosting first round win at the Dubai Open on Monday.

The former Wimbledon finalist from France overcame Kimiko Date-Krumm, the former Wimbledon semi-finalist from Japan, 7-6 (10/8), 6-4 after saving three set points in the first set.

Even though that swung the match Bartoli’s way, Date-Krumm still made a break-back in the second set and, at the age of 40, played so many spirited rallies that the two-set contest went well over two hours.

It was also an unusual encounter in that both players showed ambidextrous abilities — Bartoli striking the ball with two hands on both wings, and Date-Krumm occasionally using her left hand to return a wide ball on her double-handed backhand side. [Read more...]

Recap: New Jersey vs. Florida

Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and two assists as the New Jersey Devils continued to roll with a 5-2 win over the Florida Panthers.

Jason Arnott scored twice, Brian Rolston had a goal and an assist while Patrik Elias also scored for the red-hot Devils, who have won four straight and are 6-0-1 in their last seven. Martin Brodeur stopped 24 shots for the win.

“Any streak of wins we’ll take right now,” said Brodeur. “Right now we feel like we’re doing the right things and right now we’ll take advantage of what’s going on. It’s nice to be having fun out there once again.”

Shawn Matthias and Marty Reasoner each had a goal for the Panthers, who have dropped four straight.

Scott Clemmensen started in net but was pulled after giving up two goals on eight shots in the first period. Jacob Markstrom finished the game and in his NHL debut gave up two goals on 14 shots.

“They’ve tightened things up as a team over there,” said Florida head coach Peter DeBoer. “Their top players have found their game again and we knew coming in that they are a hot team. It showed with the way they played.” [Read more...]

Tseng And Hull Share Lead

Taiwan’s Yani Tseng and Australia’s Katherine Hull both made eagles at the last hole to share the lead after day one of the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Birkdale.

Tseng enjoyed a consistent round through the first 16 holes, the 21-year-old moving to one-under-par without dropping a shot.

She then birdied the first of the closing par fives before scoring even better to overhaul a group of four players on three-under-par. Hull later joined her on four under after also making a three at the last.
